Official photos of the overseas 5th generation Highlander pure electric model have been released. Scheduled to be released in the US market by the end of 2019

Toyota has officially released official images of the 5th generation Highlander (Test | Specs | Inquiry), the first pure electric model in the company’s car series. The new vehicle is built on the improved TNGA-K platform and is expected to be launched in the US market by the end of 2026. As a classic mid-sized family SUV around the world, this generation focuses specifically on comfort and quietness in the electrified space, for targeted upgrades with a clear product logic that meets the core needs of home users.

The exterior design of the new Highlander is characterized by sharp lines overall, a departure from the rounded, voluminous appearance of the current model. The closed front fascia, combined with C-shaped daytime running lights, adopts Toyota’s Electric Family style language, similar to the visual style of GAC Toyota’s bZ3X. Platform optimization results in more reasonable body proportions, lowering the ride height, lengthening the axle by 205mm, creating a stretched stance, increasing the vehicle width and wheelbase, which not only improves the appearance, but also provides ample space base for the third row seating layout.

Additionally, Toyota has systematically optimized aerodynamics and NVH (noise vibration harshness). Underbody panels have been added to the front and rear chassis, and sound insulation has been fitted to the A-pillars, wheel arches and roof door trim plates. The windshield and side windows feature noise-reducing glass, reducing driving noise from a structural level, in line with the core requirements of comfort in a family SUV.

The interior continues Toyota’s utilitarian design philosophy, featuring an upright LCD instrument panel and center touchscreen, and the steering wheel shift mechanism, which retains many physical buttons on the center console, uses a small lever style that provides intuitive operation without taking up interior space. The seat layout emphasizes ease of use over excessive technology, and emphasizes the convenience of operating the blinds in daily use, with 6- and 7-seater versions available to accommodate a variety of usage scenarios, such as apartment complexes and business transportation.

In the smart driving section, the new model is equipped with Toyota’s latest TSS4.0 intelligent safety systems, including a pre-collision mitigation system with pedestrian detection, full-speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure warning, and active driver assistance features. This advanced package has been iteratively improved over several generations, increasing the number of sensors and recognition capabilities, improving stability in complex road conditions and adverse weather conditions, and providing mature L2-level assisted driving capabilities that ensure basic family travel safety, rather than just piling on fancy features.

The powertrain is the central change for this generation. The fifth-generation Highlander is available in front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive options and is fully electrified with battery capacities of 77kWh and 958kWh. The manufacturer estimates a maximum range of up to approximately 515 kilometers. Fast charging performance meets the standards of mainstream family pure electric SUVs under ideal conditions. DC fast charging reaches 10% to 80% in about 3 hours, meeting the energy needs of urban commutes and medium-distance road trips.

Overall, the overseas version of the 5th generation Highlander electric model has a clear product positioning that continues to focus on home users, completing the power transition with a stable electrification plan, while continuously enhancing traditional advantages such as quietness, safety and other design space. The vehicle maintains Toyota’s consistent practical and reliable character, rather than blindly pursuing aggressive parameters such as long-distance high performance.

Currently, only overseas release plans have been announced for this car, and final mileage and configuration adjustments regarding the domestic release date are pending official announcement. For users interested in a pure electric midsize SUV for the family, features such as NVH optimization of the space layout and a mature smart driving system make it worth seeing its product highlights among similar models.
