Chennai: AMMK General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran officially rejoined NDA on wednesday.Dhinakaran met Union Minister Piyush Goyal and conveyed his party’s support for what he called “good governance” in the state.Commenting on joining the NDA, AMMK party general secretary TTV Dhinakaran said, “Keeping in mind the larger objective, old issues should not be allowed to overshadow or sideline the party’s interests and the welfare of Tamil Nadu. Compromising for the sake of others will not weaken us. Similarly, as Amma cadres acting as a centripetal force, we stand united and resolute to ensure that Amma’s rule returns to Tamil Nadu.” Governance will be restored and good governance will prevail. That is our clear position. ”asked about coordination with AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami After objecting, Mr Dhinakaran said the compromise would not weaken his side and described it as a “fight between allies” with Mr Palaniswami. He said his decision was driven by the party’s prospects and the larger goal of not compromising the interests of Tamil Nadu, and asserted that the AMMK cadres, who he described as followers of late Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa, would come together as one team to bring back “Amma’s rule” – people’s rule and good governance of the state.Mr Dhinakaran’s return to the NDA marks a significant political decline from his previous position, in which he publicly branded Palaniswami a “traitor” and repeatedly denied working under his leadership. Some AMMK supporters are now concerned that the decision could undermine what they call the party’s “organized anti-EPS vote base,” especially among the Thevars in southern Tamil Nadu.Immediately after confirming the alliance, Dhinakaran stepped up his attacks on the ruling DMK, accusing the state government of failing to curb drug abuse and allowing law and order to deteriorate.According to AMMK leaders, Dhinakaran will attend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s public rally in Chennai on January 23 and will mobilize party workers there to show strength after the alliance.“We accept the leadership’s decision, but we are apprehensive about the electoral implications and the possibility of losing voters who are against the EPS which will sideline the Thevar community,” said a former MLA and AMMK cadre. Another leader said the AMMK polled 30,000-40,000 votes in around 20 assembly segments in southern Tamil Nadu in the last elections, which adversely affected the prospects of the AIADMK.Speculation about the alliance accelerated after a photo of Dhinakaran with NDA leaders, including Tamil Maanila Congress president GK Vasan, Tamil Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam founder John Pandian, IJK founder Paribendar, AIADMK president Edappadi K. Palaniswami, and senior BJP leaders was posted on a BJP banner at Prime Minister Modi’s planned rally in Chengalpattu.BJP leaders confirmed the alliance and said seat-sharing talks have begun. A senior BJP leader said the party is offering seven seats to Dhinakaran, including Andipatti and Shoringuru. The leader added that negotiations were also underway to accommodate O Panneerselvam with AMMK.AIADMK leaders said they had no objection to Dhinakaran joining the NDA as long as Palaniswami approved the move. “We are not against his joining the NDA but his joining the AIADMK,” the AIADMK leader said.
