All India Bank Strike on January 27, 2026
UFBU, an umbrella organization representing nine major bank unions covering employees of public sector banks and some older private sector banks, had proposed a five-day working week from Monday to Friday.
In a letter to banking unions, UFBU said that in 2015, the Indian Banks Association (IBA) had agreed to declare the second and fourth Saturday as holidays. But the government didn’t do that.
In February 2023, the UFBU agreed to increase the working hours per day from Monday to Friday by 40 minutes, and the IBA agreed to declare the remaining Saturdays as holidays, subject to the approval of the authorities. The proposal has already been recommended to the government and has remained pending for the past two years, UFBU said.
UFBU also announced that it had postponed its January 27 strike. However, given the long delay in implementing the two-day work week, the call for a strike is valid.
UFBU has asked all its affiliated banking unions to go on an all-India strike on January 27, 2026.
