New Delhi: Chief Minister of Assam Himanta Biswa Sarma On Tuesday, it announced a Rs 500-crore defamation suit against Congress leaders Gaurav Gogoi, Jitendra Singh and Bhupesh Baghel for making false defamation allegations.Sarma said in a post on X that the incident followed his remarks at a parliamentary press conference. “Today, I have filed a defamation suit against Congress leaders Jitendra Singh, Bhupesh Baghel and Gaurav Gogoi for damages of Rs 500 crore for making false, malicious and defamatory allegations against me through a press conference,” he wrote.

The Assam Chief Minister said both civil and criminal proceedings have been initiated. “I am commencing civil and criminal defamation proceedings on February 9, 2026 against @JitendraSAlwar, @bhupeshbaghel, @GauravGogoiAsm and @DsaikiaOfficial for making false, malicious and defamatory statements against me in a press conference today,” Sarma said.“The days of hit-and-run politics are over. If they have any courage and proof, let them prove all the allegations in court,” he said, adding, “I will not be intimidated by propaganda, organized defamation or political theater against the so-called Gandhi family slaves.” There was no immediate response from Congressional leaders named in the defamation case.
