School bus hits and kills 11-year-old girl in Brooklyn’s Bath Beach

BIRTH BEACH, Brooklyn (WABC) — A child was killed after being hit by a school bus in a hit-and-run incident in Bath Beach, Brooklyn, police said.

A new video shows the moments leading up to the horrifying and tragic accident.

Just after 3 p.m. Thursday, an 11-year-old girl was struck by a school bus that failed to stop at 23rd Street and Bath Street as she tried to cross the street.

That was right after I got home from school.

The video shows the girl standing on the right-of-way corner and running across the street just as the school bus attempts to turn.

“She ran as fast as she could. She just started and did whatever she wanted. She saw the train coming and she tried to run to beat it and it was just like that. I’ve driven that type of vehicle, so it’s hard to see because the dimensions are higher. You’re higher up and there are obstacles,” the resident said.

Just before she crossed the road, the driver was still approaching the intersection, and then, as the driver attempted to turn, the glare of the sun appeared to hit her windshield as she sped across the road.

The girl was taken to Maimonides Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead, police said.

The school bus driver did not remain at the scene, but was found several hours later by police several miles away in Brooklyn.

“What I don’t like are the turns where cars turn when you can cross on a green light,” said resident Julia Kostenko.

Employees at the warehouse on the corner where the incident occurred said the girl had just bought chocolates and soda a few minutes earlier.

“Every day. She comes every day. She’s a good customer of mine. It’s quiet,” the deli employee said.
