Taiwan’s Evergreen Symphony Orchestra (ESO) has announced the appointment of Zhang Tingshuo as concertmaster, and he will replace another leader yet to be chosen.

Based in Germany, Zhang has served as concertmaster for Germany’s Göttingen Symphony Orchestra, Austria’s Grafeneck Academy Orchestra, Japan’s Seiji Ozawa Academy of Music, and Kaohsiung’s Weiwuying Contemporary Ensemble.

He has also performed with the Verbier Festival Orchestra and the Gstaad Festival Orchestra.

Chan graduated from the Hamburg Academy of Music and Performing Arts and studied under Andreas Rohn, former concertmaster of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra.

ESO appointed conductor Jaap van Zweden as artist-in-residence in January 2025. Since then, Van Zweden has overseen the appointment of 10 new players.

Chan previously performed with van Zweden in Switzerland’s Gstaad Festival Orchestra in 2021. Upon his appointment, Mr. Zhang said, “I am very much looking forward to working with the members of the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra again with Maestro van Zweden and contributing to Taiwan’s music scene.”
