A probation officer accused of driving under the influence in Vista and causing a demolition derby-like traffic accident and resulting injuries was back in jail on numerous criminal charges, authorities announced Tuesday.
Isaias Diego Miguel, 32, was jailed Monday night on 19 charges, including six felonies, after he allegedly crashed his pickup truck into six other vehicles and various roadside infrastructure, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
Lt. Noah Zurnow said the road crash began around 7:30 p.m., when Miguel’s car crashed into a parked car and a steel gate at an apartment complex in the 1400 block of Oak Drive.
Miguel then allegedly crashed his truck into two other vehicles parked nearby and a fire hydrant before driving onto the wrong side of the road on Foothill Drive, causing passing vehicles to skid and several oncoming vehicles to take evasive action to get out of his way.
The driver then allegedly crossed the double yellow line to overtake a vehicle, causing a head-on collision.
“In an attempt to flee the scene, Miguel backed up and then accelerated forward, ramming the victim’s vehicle and pushing it away,” Zarnau said. “The victim sustained injuries and … received medical treatment.” [by paramedics] on site. ”
Miguel’s pickup truck then collided with an oncoming minivan, causing extensive damage to the minivan and causing minor injuries to the driver.
At this point, Miguel’s car was severely damaged, including the loss of the driver’s side front tire, but he continued to drive until he lost control one last time, causing the truck to veer off the road and crash into a utility pole in an area near the Altavista Botanical Gardens, where police took him into custody, authorities said.
Miguel was being held in the Vista County Jail on $555,760 bail pending arraignment on a series of charges including driving under the influence, hit-and-run causing death, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and violating terms of probation.
