Thursday, February 12th: Gungahlin locals woke up to the news that their local watering hole, the Siren Bar and Restaurant, was going into liquidation.

A notice was pasted on the front door of the bar stating that Slaven Thorline had been appointed as liquidator and that Gungahlin Restaurant and Bar Ltd, which operated the bar, was going into liquidation.

“The company has ceased trading and the facility is currently closed,” the notice said.

But a handwritten note taped to one window said it would only be closed until further notice “for maintenance.”

The accommodation above the bar is owned by Abode and is therefore not affected by the liquidation.

Community stalwart John Mikita expressed disbelief that the bar would disappear.

“Gungahlin has some local institutions that we all know and love and sadly we have just lost one of them,” he said.

“Dan and his amazing team have been a local haven for many of us for over 15 years, so seeing the signage saying they are no longer trading will come as a huge shock to many.

“It’s really sad to see small businesses that have been around for many years disappear like this.”

Others expressed concern that the bar was accepting event bookings and payments on the day liquidation began.

“Very interesting, I paid $180 in advance for the Valentine’s dinner and now my tickets etc are gone?” one person wrote on social media.

“I feel really sorry for the staff who are waiting for their paychecks! This is the first time they’ve found out.” [on 11 February] In group chat. They have no hope,” another person wrote.

Siren Bar was opened in 2011 by Dan Gaul.

It was known for its monthly themed nights, live entertainment, and creative cocktails.
