Real Health: Stroke: Why Every Second Matters

What are the symptoms of a stroke? How should I react? And why is blood pressure important?

Professor Ronan Collins, HSE Lead for the National Stroke Program, joins us on this week’s episode of the Real Health Podcast.

Professor Ronan Collins stresses that stroke is common, with a lifetime risk of one in four and can affect people of all ages. Approximately 85% of cases are caused by clogged arteries, and the rest are caused by bleeding in the brain. Results depend on prompt treatment. Therefore, “time is brain”, meaning that every second counts. He appealed to the public to be aware of emergency warning signs such as a drooping face, weakness in the arms and difficulty speaking, and to call emergency services immediately instead of ignoring the symptoms in everyday life.
