Nick Goepper, of Lawrenceburg, Indiana, the only Hoosier to compete in the Winter Olympics, fell from his bronze medal spot on the final run of Friday’s freestyle skiing halfpipe competition.
On his third and final run, Goepper was nearing the end of what was likely a gold medal performance when he hit the top of the pipe on his way down from his final trick. He hit the bottom and remained there for several minutes before being attended to by medical personnel. Goepper left.
In the final run, Canada’s Brendan Mackay surpassed Goepper’s score. The highest score of an athlete’s three runs is what counts.
Goepper could have become the first American to win individual medals at four different Winter Olympics.
Goepper won bronze in freeski slopestyle in 2014 and silver in 2018 and 2022. He came out of retirement and changed fields.
Goepper finished the second day of qualifying on Friday morning. Due to weather delays on Thursday, qualifying was held on the same day as the final.
Goepper’s first run in the finals started promisingly, but faltered in the final stages.
Goepper completed the second run with 89 points and jumped into the bronze medal spot.
