Mr. Reiner is scheduled to appear in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom for arraignment on two counts of first-degree murder, along with his new public defender, Kimberly Greene.
Mr. Reiner, 32, the third of Rob Reiner’s four children, has been held without bail since his arrest on Dec. 14, hours after the actor-director and his wife of 36 years were found dead of stab wounds at their home in Los Angeles’ upscale Brentwood neighborhood.
Lawyer before ReinerAlan Jackson, a prominent private attorney, had to recuse himself from the case at the previous hearing in January due to what he and his client called circumstances beyond their control. He said he was not allowed to discuss the reasons due to legal ethics, but he categorically declared outside the courtroom during the farewell, “According to California law, Nick Reiner is not guilty of murder.”
Jackson did not elaborate, but said the conclusion came after weeks of intensive investigation before his team had to hand over the case. He said he wanted to push back against false reporting about the incident.
It is not clear who hired Jackson to represent Reiner or who paid for it. Generally, defendants use public defenders when they cannot afford a private attorney.
Whatever his long-term plans, Reiner is expected to plead not guilty at this stage of the case, as is common with criminal defendants.

Rob Reiner, 78, and Michelle Singer Reiner, 70, died from “multiple sharp impact injuries,” the Los Angeles County coroner said in an initial finding. Authorities said he was killed hours before his body was discovered. A court order prevents further details from being released. Authorities have not said anything about a possible motive.
Prosecutors said they have not yet decided whether to seek the death penalty against Nick Reiner, who is eligible for the death penalty based on the charges.
