After months of speculation about Murray’s future with the team, Arizona has notified the 2019 No. 1 draft pick that it plans to release Murray next Wednesday, when the new league year begins, barring a trade, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.
Murray already has $36.8 million guaranteed in 2026 and would have been guaranteed another $19.5 million in 2027 if he was still on the roster as of Day 5 of the 2026 league year (March 16).
Sources told ESPN that being released was the desired outcome for Murray. As he becomes a free agent next week, Murray has two teams he wants to join, sources said.

In a post to X. “I just wanted to be the one to end this organization’s 77-year drought. I’m sorry I failed. I wish this community and my brothers the best. I’m no stranger to adversity, and I’m ready for whatever comes next. I trust God and my work ethic. I truly believe my best ball is in front of me and I look forward to proving it. Godspeed.”

However, Murray was never able to reach winning heights again, as he never lost in high school and only played three games in college – Texas A&M vs. Oklahoma. He compiled a 38-48-1 record at Arizona, but his final five years with the Cardinals were marred by injuries.
Murray played in all 16 games in 2019 and 2020, but missed three games in 2021 and six games in 2022 after tearing his ACL in December of the same year. He returned for the final eight games of 2023, played every game in 2024, and appeared in just the first five games last season before missing the rest of the season with a foot injury.
Murray threw 121 touchdowns and 60 interceptions in seven seasons. He also scored 32 rushing touchdowns.
