Nepal election results 2026 LIVE: Balendra Shah, who has strong support among Nepal’s Gen Z, is seen as the frontrunner for the prime minister’s post
Nepal election results 2026 LIVE: In September 2025, thousands of young Nepalis took to the streets in protests against the country’s entrenched political elite, ultimately toppling the government. In the first election since what many have described as the Gen Z movement – even a “revolution”- the rapper-turned-politician Balendra Shah’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has emerged as a dominant force, winning 25 seats and leading in 93 constituencies. The outcome signals a decisive shift away from the long-standing political status quo in Nepal.
Shah’s own politics is rooted in a critique of Nepal’s entrenched political elite and old guard. This shift is reflected in the election results as well, with him widening his lead over CPN-UML chairman and former prime minister KP Sharma Oli in his home constituency of Jhapa-5. Oli had to resign as the PM after the Gen Z protests in September 2025.
RSP is leading Nepal’s proportional representation vote count with 35,091 votes, or about 57.2% of the 61,399 ballots counted so far. The party has already won 25 seats in the first-past-the-post contest and is leading in 93 other constituencies, according to The Kathmandu Post.
Balendra Shah, who recently served as the Mayor of Kathmandu, has secured more than 15,000 votes in Jhapa-5, a constituency long considered the stronghold of four-time prime minister and CPN-UML chairman KP Sharma Oli. Oli has received just 3,300 votes so far.
How are votes being counted?
Nepal’s lower house of parliament has 275 seats in total. Of these, 165 members are elected through direct elections under the first-past-the-post system, where vote counting is currently underway. The remaining 110 seats will be allocated later through the proportional representation system.

Why Nepal’s Gen Z supports Balen Shah’s new party?
Shah’s party is widely seen as Gen Z-backed, with his rise closely linked to the wave of youth frustration that fuelled last year’s protests.
A former rapper with a strong social media presence, Shah built a strong following among young urban voters through digital outreach, anti-establishment messaging and sharp criticism of traditional political elites.
Meanwhile, RSP candidate Ranju Neupane (Darshana) was the first to win a parliamentary seat from Kathmandu-1.
60% voter turnout, Gen Z’s support for new politics
Nepal’s parliamentary elections, the first since last year’s Gen Z–led protests, recorded an estimated 60 percent voter turnout, with officials noting strong participation from young voters.
Preliminary estimates suggested that Gen Z voters brought what authorities described as “unprecedented” energy to the polls. The Election Commission said the voting process was conducted smoothly due to improved voter education, cooperation from political parties and extensive security arrangements.
The election, held months after youth-led protests had raised questions about the credibility of the government and the Election Commission, was largely peaceful across the country. After polling ended at 5 pm, Officiating Election Commissioner Ram Prasad Bhandari thanked Nepali citizens for taking part in the vote.
Role of youth in Nepal’s elections
Speaking to ANI, Joint Secretary and spokesperson of the Nepal Election Commission Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said, “This election was planned in special circumstances. There were some doubts among the people about the success of the selection, but due to the effective cooperation from political parties, candidates, all voters, Govt of Nepal, the private sector, the media and all sectors, we were able to successfully conclude the elections.”
Referring to the role of young voters after the earlier protests, Bhattarai said, “Gen Z has been very much supportive in this election. Their participation in this election process has also been positive in terms of Candidates as well as voters.”
How does Nepal vote?
Nepal elects members to its House of Representatives through a mixed electoral system combining first-past-the-post (FPTP) voting and proportional representation. Voters cast two ballots on election day — one for an individual candidate in their constituency and another for a political party.
A total of 275 seats in the lower house of the Federal Parliament are being filled, according to the International Foundation for Electoral Systems. Of these, 165 members are elected through direct constituency contests under the FPTP system, while the remaining 110 seats are allocated through proportional representation based on each party’s share of the vote. The 165 constituency seats are spread across Nepal’s seven provinces.

Nepal Election Results 2026 LIVE: • The election pits long-established mainstream parties against a relatively new political force that many believe could emerge as the front runner. Read here for more
• It will determine whether veteran leaders who have dominated Nepal’s politics for decades remain relevant or if a younger generation of leaders takes charge.
• The vote is seen as unusual because Nepal’s constitution does not normally allow snap elections, but one became necessary after the political crisis in September.
• The interim government formation and the dissolution of Parliament were carried out through special provisions outside the usual constitutional framework.
• According to political analyst Krishna Khanal, the key expectation from the election is that it will help bring Nepal’s constitutional system back on track.
