Pixar’s “Hoppers” is in theaters and is currently on track to achieve a domestic opening of around $40 million, a big win for the original animation.
With very positive reviews and an ‘A’ CinemaScore in audience exit polls, the film is expected to continue performing well for the rest of the month.
It’s certainly doing much better than Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride,” which debuts in third place with around $8-10 million for the weekend, which is not a good start for a movie with a budget of over $80 million.
Combined with mixed critical reviews and a resoundingly bad ‘C+’ CinemaScore from audiences, this is expected to go away pretty quickly. It marks a rare failure lately for WB, which has had a decent track record with arthouse films like “Wuthering Heights” last month, which is still in fifth place this weekend.
Paramount’s “Scream 7” falls to second place in its second week and the title is expected to gross $16.3 million, a rather disastrous 74% drop in the second weekend. That huge opening weekend increase appears to have been limited specifically to that release.
In fourth place is the animated film “Goat”, which in its fourth weekend grossed another $6.1 million.
Next weekend is a quiet one with the release of teen romantic drama “Reminders of Him” and several indie films like “The Gates” and “Bodycam,” while Netflix will air the first two episodes of the second season of its live-action “One Piece” in theaters.
