Who is Ish Sodhi? New Zealand cricketer seen crying during the India-New Zealand T20 World Cup final

A video showing a New Zealand cricketer getting emotional during the T20 World Cup final between India and New Zealand in Ahmedabad has gone viral on social media.

The player in the clip has been identified as Ish Sodhi. In the video, Sodhi appears visibly emotional as the New Zealand national anthem plays before the start of the match.

Sharing the clip online, a social media user wrote: “Meet Ish Sodhi. He was born in India. He didn’t get opportunities in cricket here, he moved to New Zealand to play the sport. During the New Zealand national anthem, he became emotional, possibly remembering his roots. Patriotism doesn’t come from priority, it flows in the blood.”

All about Ish Sodhi

Inderbir Singh “Ish” Sodhi, born 31 October 1992, is a New Zealand international cricketer who represents the national team in all formats. Sodhi, a right-arm leg-spin bowler and right-hand batsman, has been a key part of New Zealand’s limited overs set-up.


Born in India, Sodhi moved to Papatoetoe in New Zealand with his family at the age of four. He made his international debut in a test match against Bangladesh during New Zealand’s tour of Bangladesh in 2013.
Sodhi made his Twenty20 International debut against the West Indies in July 2014 and played his first One Day International for New Zealand against Zimbabwe on 2 August 2015. In January 2018, Sodhi rose to the number one spot in the ICC rankings for T20I bowlers after a solid run of performances. He was also part of the New Zealand team that finished runners-up in the 2019 Cricket World Cup. Interestingly, Sodhi has also had considerable success against India in the shortest format. Spinner holds the record for most T20I wickets by a New Zealand bowler against India. In 25 matches, he has taken 30 wickets at an average of 23.80.
