Cassidy is a master at finding the right moment to swoop in and take advantage of Formula E’s twin 50kW, all-wheel drive ATTACK MODE power boosts. The 2026 Hankook Mexico City E-Prix was just the latest example of many in the GEN3 era.
The New Zealanders brought citroen It was the French car manufacturer’s fourth win in five races, and the first in Formula E, with Mortara leading the way, cutting through the pack and taking the lead under intense pressure, with the Mahindra driver withdrawing at the end of the introduction of attack mode.
However, Cassidy held on to win another silver medal after finishing third in the opening race in Sao Paulo. The top five crossed the line within a second and Mortara’s mirrors were filled with reigning champion Rolando until the dominant final turn.
Taylor Bernard got off to the best start, forcing pole sitter Sébastien Buemi (Envision Racing) into a defensive mistake in Turn 1. Chasing the honor of becoming the youngest race winner in series history, the young Brit took the lead on the first lap, but was narrowed down to the top six in the early stages and was passed by Dennis at the line, finishing just short of taking the checkered flag in a glorious fourth place.
Dennis himself finished fifth ahead of Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein.
Pepe Marti (Cupra Kilo) overcame a 60th place penalty and a stop-go for repairs after a violent shunt in São Paulo to score his first points in the second race with an impressive seventh place ahead of Jean-Eric Vergne. citroenNico Muller (Porsche) and Norman Nato (Nissan).
As a result, Cassidy topped the drivers’ table with 40 points, followed by Dennis with 36 points and Roland with 34 points. citroen Andretti led his team in running points, 44-36. In the Manufacturers’ World Championship, Stellantis has a seven-point lead over Porsche.
As it happened…
Bernard got off to a good start, forcing Buemi into defensive maneuvers to maintain first place. The Swiss seemed to have achieved that, but he took the lead at Turn 1, giving the lead to the DS Penske driver, followed by Mortara and Muller, with the Envision’s Buemi eventually dropping down to 18th place.
Wehrlein, sitting in eighth place, was the first to jump on the first of the two mandatory 50kW all-wheel drive attack mode boosts. 4 minutes until the start of the Porsche driver.
Meanwhile, on lap five, Mortara strangled Bernard to take the lead at Turn 1, allowing Müller to follow. Wehrlein also used his boost to escape, passing his teammate Müller at the hairpin a few corners later and taking the lead into the Foro Sol.
Wehrlein led Mortara, Müller, Dennis, Bernard, Günther, Evans, Ticktum, Roland and da Costa on the sixth lap.
Da Costa and Maroney in 17th place then attacked on lap eight, but the rest of the pack still held their ground. Meanwhile, Müller slipped past Mortara’s second place at Turn 1 on lap nine, sending his teammate into P1 at the hairpin. Porsche had their first win of Season 8, and they were competing in a one-two race as a team.
Entering the 11th lap, the pace started to pick up. Sao Paulo winner Jake Dennis was seventh with 0.5% energy left in the remaining top ten. Da Costa took a good position at the front of the top 10 in attack mode, but was pushed from fourth to sixth at Turn 1 on lap 12.
Mortara took the lead again, with Müller, Ticktum, Wehrlein, Bernard, da Costa, Dennis, Günther, Evans and Roland rounding out the top ten, with, ominously, four Porsche-powered cars in the top five.
At the halfway stage, when impatience seemed to be building, the wreckage on the edge of the point-paying position flashed. Three-wides don’t work that often at hairpins… On lap 17, it was Oliver Rowland in the Nissan who seemed to have the most energy. He was up 2-4% on the rest to activate the first attack mode.
Bad timing though. A full course yellow was called for with Nick de Vries Mahindra needing a recovery, but caution continued as Jaguar’s Da Costa veered onto the grass at the hairpin to avoid Bernard, reducing Roland’s attack mode to zero.
The race returned to green on lap 22 with Müller, Mortara, Wehrlein, Bernard, Dennis, Evans, Ticktum, da Costa and Rowland rounding out the top ten.
As the field narrowed, several drivers took a hit at the hairpin. On lap 26 Vergne, da Costa and Günther seemed most intertwined.
At the sharp end, where many had never yet been in attack mode, Evans was the first to blink, quickly closing in on the front of the pack on lap 27 and ahead of front leader Muller, who braked too late in his defense at the hairpin.
Mortara, Cassidy and Muller followed with 50kW of boost. However, as former McLaren engineer Albie Lau said on the broadcast, it was Cassidy who had the energy in his hands and hit the best timing by overlapping on the attack and taking the lead on lap 30.
The next time Dennis started moving was on lap 32. The engineer told me that he still had the energy to do a good lap with the lead numbers, so he was able to advance to third place, but as Mortara was defending with his elbows out, Cassidy ran with a 1.3 second lead.
From there it looked like Cassidy would lose, but the Kiwi claimed 12 spots on the grid. Mortara was the closest competitor with an additional 2 minutes of attack mode available for hunting. citroen Driver is down.
With the top 10 all attacking, reigning champion Roland quickly overtook Muller and Dennis at Turn 1 on lap 35 and moved into third place, but Dennis reversed the lead half a lap later.
The top five all passed the stadium within 0.5 seconds on lap 36. Rolando was squeezed back by Dennis for the last spot on the podium, and with Mortara’s attacking power fading, Cassidy was unable to take the lead. Defensive drive as one of the masters of Formula E in this GEN3 era.
Cassidy hung on in great style, guiding Mortara and Roland home for the French giants. Citroen’s He achieved his first victory in Formula E in just his second race.
