In-house AI server chips could give Apple a new advantage

Ming-Chi Kuo writes in a post about X:

Apple’s self-developed AI server chips are scheduled to go into mass production in the second half of 2026, and its own data centers are scheduled to begin construction and operation in 2027, potentially indicating that Apple expects significant growth in on-device AI demand starting in 2027.

There were rumors for many years Apple reportedly had plans to develop its own server-class chip focused on AI. Well, it looks like a new chip is on the way.

No matter what criticisms are thrown at Apple about its recent slow start-up in AI or the quality of its software, it’s hard to argue that one of the company’s current strengths is its silicon team.

Apple silicon is the core of the iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and it gets better every year. And more recently, Apple has been able to ship its own cellular modems (C1 and C1X) and wireless connectivity chips (N1).

And now its skilled silicon team is turning its attention to AI server chips.

Kuo said the timeline for the chip itself is 2026, while the new data center is expected to come online in 2027.

However, since the chips are expected to go into production this year, they are expected to be deployed on a small scale in existing data centers.

What do you think about Apple manufacturing its own AI server chips? Do you think it would be a unique advantage for the company? Let us know in the comments.
