Bisciotti said Jackson saw nothing “special” in the decision, and Bisciotti, who fired Harbaugh over the phone, said he never imagined something like that would happen. Mr. Bisciotti said he did not want Mr. Harbaugh to drive to his office, but apologized over the phone for firing him. During the call, Mr. Bisciotti said he was having trouble breathing and Mr. Harbaugh comforted him. Bisciotti said Harbaugh understood the decision and would have fired him even if the Ravens beat the Steelers in Week 18 and made the playoffs. Harbaugh was scheduled to coach the Ravens for “a week” after the regular season, he said. New coach Bisciotti said he does not disqualify a coach for a losing record because he considers the coach’s situation. A number of college coaches have contacted the Ravens regarding coaching vacancies. But Bisciotti said the team has not contacted any college coaches. I don’t know… it’s good for Mike. I don’t know, talk to (Eric DeCosta). “I love Mike, I mean, I’ve respected Mike for 18 years, but it’s really shocking that he did it the way he did. It’s kind of crazy.” DeCosta said increasing defensive pressure is the team’s priority when it comes to roster construction. Bisciotti said the injury to Nnamdi Madubuike hurt the Ravens defensive line’s performance this season. DeCosta said he would like to sign Jackson to another contract and be able to target other players. Free agency — something non-traditional for DeCosta and the team. Bisciotti wants to sign Jackson to an extension before free agency begins, as he doesn’t want the situation to drag out like it did before Jackson signed his last contract. Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti and executive vice president and general manager Eric DeCosta are now tasked with finding the fourth coach in franchise history. They answered questions about their decision to part ways with Harbaugh and their plans for the series’ future.

They are in the middle of the interview process and will be interviewing at least 15 candidates. It will take at least a week to make a decision, but they will begin narrowing down the candidates and will conduct in-person interviews and follow-up interviews.

This is DeCosta’s first time hiring a new coach, and Bisciotti knows how important it is to hire the right person.

Bisciotti said the decision to fire Harbaugh was made with much thought and prayer, and that he spoke with DeCosta about the matter three or four weeks ago.

“We actually led the league in allowing big leads in the fourth quarter, which is not something winning organizations do,” Bisciotti said.

Bisciotti said he made the decision to fire Harbaugh sometime last week, although he didn’t know the exact timing.

“When I woke up on Monday, I knew I was going to do it,” Bisciotti said.

Bisciotti spoke with several veterans about the decision and said quarterback Lamar Jackson is not a confrontational personality. Bisciotti said there was nothing “special” about Jackson’s decision.

Bisciotti, who fired Harbaugh over the phone, said he never imagined something like that would happen. He said he didn’t want Harbaugh to drive to work, but apologized over the phone for firing him.

Bisciotti said he choked up during the call and Harbaugh comforted him. Bisciotti said Harbaugh understood the decision.

Bisciotti said he takes the coach’s situation into consideration when appointing a new head coach, so a losing record does not disqualify him.

Bisciotti said DeCosta is one of the best general managers in the league and will be left alone to do his job.

A number of college coaches have contacted the Ravens regarding coaching vacancies, but Bisciotti said the team has not contacted any college coaches.

Bisciotti did not participate in the first round of interviews because of the rule that if an owner attends one interview, he must attend all interviews.

Midway through the press conference, the Steelers announced that Mike Tomlin has resigned as Pittsburgh’s head coach. Bisciotti joked that if Pittsburgh hires Harbaugh, he would consider hiring Tomlin.

“Wouldn’t that be great? Only if John (Harbaugh) took the Pittsburgh job. Wow. Wouldn’t that be interesting? I don’t know… it was good for Mike. I don’t know, talk to (Eric DeCosta). I love Mike, I mean, I’ve respected Mike for 18 years, and I’m really shocked that he did something like that. It’s kind of crazy.”

Coach DeCosta said that increasing defensive pressure is the team’s priority when it comes to roster composition.

Coach Bisciotti said Nnamdi Madubuike’s injury has negatively impacted the Ravens defensive line’s performance this season.

DeCosta said he hopes to sign Jackson to another contract, which would also allow Jackson to pursue other free agents, which is not traditional for DeCosta and the team.

Bisciotti wants to sign Jackson to an extension before free agency begins because he doesn’t want the situation to drag out like it did before Jackson signed his last contract.
