Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey have confirmed they are working on a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s hit musical Sunday in the Park with George.
The “Wicked” co-stars jointly posted on Instagram Wednesday morning a cryptic photo of themselves sitting in front of Georges Seurat’s famous painting “Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte,” which served as the show’s inspiration. In the caption of her post, Bailey wrote, “As long as it’s good, it’s good,” referring to the lyrics of the musical’s title song.
Variety details
last month, Deadline reported Grande and Bailey were said to be aiming to reprise their last major Broadway show, Sunday in the Park with George, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford in 2017. The Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning musical premiered in 1984 starring Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters and is divided into two acts with the same cast playing different characters. The first one centers on George, a fictionalized version of Seurat, who is obsessed with painting masterpieces with the help of his muse, Dot. The second piece focuses on George’s great-grandson (also known as George), a contemporary artist, who enlists his grandmother Marie to help him unveil his latest work.
According to Deadline, the revival is scheduled to open at London’s Barbican Theater in 2027, but no official announcement has been made yet. The Barbican did not immediately respond. varietyThis is a comment request from .
