Gmail widget updated with Material 3 expressiveness tweaks

Google has updated the home screen widgets in Gmail for Android to make Material 3 expressive adjustments.

The main change is that the FAB (floating action button) for composing emails in the top right corner is now a pill instead of a round square that says Material You. This matches other Google Workspace M3 Expressive widget updates.

This will significantly shrink the header and add a Gmail icon in front of “Inbox” or any other folder name in all but the narrowest widths. As a result, another line of text appears at the bottom.

Additionally, Google has reduced the left and right padding so you can read more of the subject line and email.

The Material 3 expressive widget was rolled out as of last month’s Gmail Android release (version 2025.12.01).

Overall, it’s a simple modernization of Material 3 expressiveness with the addition of Gmail. Google Calendar (schedule + month view) and drive (Recommended file). Google hasn’t updated Keep yet, but Tasks will benefit the most from an update.
