No. 9 Gonzaga University vs. Washington State University Game Preview: Zags and Cougs clash for the 153rd time in history | Gonzaga Men’s Basketball

Pullman, Wash. — The No. 9 Gonzaga Bulldogs (17-1, 5-0) and Washington State Cougars (8-10, 3-2) will square off for the 153rd time Thursday at 7 p.m. The regional matchup will be televised on CBS Sports Network.

The Cougars hold a 98-54 advantage in the series, but the Bulldogs have won nine of the last 10 games, including their most recent seven-game winning streak. WSU last won the series in 2010, when Klay Thompson scored 24 points to lead the Cougs to an 81-59 victory.

About Gonzaga

The Zags will travel 128 miles to Pullman after a week off after defeating Santa Clara 89-77 last Thursday. In the game, Graham Icke set career highs for Gonzaga with 34 points and 11 rebounds, giving GU its 10th straight win, including a 5-0 start in the West Coast Conference. Ike’s 10th double-double of the season earned him his third WCC Player of the Week award.

Since that win, GU has dropped one spot in the AP Top 25 poll for two consecutive weeks. The Zags are currently ranked No. 9 in the preseason poll after opening the season ranked No. 21.

Gonzaga ranks No. 8 on KenPom, with No. 6 offense and No. 12 defense, making it one of six teams in the nation to rank in KenPom’s top 12 in both offense and defense. The Bulldogs also sit in fifth place in the NCAA NET rankings with a perfect record of 3-1 against No. 1 teams and 14-0 in No. 2, 3 and 4 games.

The Zags are led by Ike, who is averaging 17.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, and Braden Huff, who is also averaging 17.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Tyon Grant-Foster is the only Bulldog player to average double-digit points in scoring at 11.7 points per game.

As a team, Gonzaga is averaging 91.4 points per game (11th in the nation), 43 rebounds, 20 assists, 8.5 steals, 10.6 turnovers, 52.6 percent from the field, and 36.9 percent from 3-point range.

About Washington State

Washington State returns home Saturday with a hard-fought 88-82 loss to St. Mary’s in Moraga.

The Cougs trailed by as many as 18 points, but came within two possessions multiple times in the second half, cutting the gap to three points with just over seven minutes left. But a 20-point performance by a trio of Gaels ended WSU’s six-point lead. Was was led by freshman Ace Glass with 24 points, marking his sixth straight game in double-digit scoring and his highest score in a conference game.

After going 5-8 in non-conference play, WSU rode the momentum going into WCC play, finishing third in the conference behind Saint Mary’s and Gonzaga with a 3-2 record.

The Cougs are ranked No. 148 on KenPom, with a No. 139 offense and No. 165 defense. In the NCAA NET, the Cougs are ranked No. 145 and are a combined 0-7 against No. 1 and No. 2 teams and 7-3 against No. 3 and No. 4 opponents.

WSU is led by two double-digit scorers, with Glass averaging 16 points per game and ND Okafor averaging 10.1 points per game. Three other Cougs are averaging at least nine points per game: Tomas Thrasterson (9.9 points), Emeli Yaraho (9.7 points) and Richards Vevers (9.4 points).

As a team, the Cougs are averaging 75.2 points, 35.8 rebounds, 12.4 assists and 5.7 steals per game while shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 34.3 percent from beyond the arc.

One of the big problems for Washington State this season is turnovers. Was ranks last in the WCC in turnover margin, giving up the ball 13.5 times per game. WSU will need to limit turnovers and bounce back well to pull off the upset.
