Solabia Nutrition announced clinical evidence supporting brain berry ingredients support spatial working memory and cerebrovascular function. This cognitive health supplement is based on extracts of the Aronia ‘Nero Eggato’ variety and is standardized at 25% cyanidin.
The new study builds on previous human clinical trials that demonstrated brainberry benefits on cognitive performance, including improved psychomotor speed and attention. The study was conducted in the Netherlands by Solabia Nutrition’s in-house research and development team in collaboration with Maastricht University.
“The ability to accurately measure changes in memory and executive function is important, as cognitive performance becomes increasingly important as a health marker in an aging society,” Sorabia Nutrition emphasizes.
“For the nutraceutical industry, clinically validated natural solutions that demonstrate measurable effects on cognition are key to advancing evidence-based brain health formulations.”
“Super Berry” for brain fitness
This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover study involved 30 healthy older adults with an average age of 65 years who were overweight or obese and at high risk for cognitive impairment.
This six-week study evaluated Brainberry’s effects on cognitive performance.
“The main strength of the study design was that it directly and objectively assessed both cerebrovascular function and cognitive performance using a highly validated gold standard methodology,” Sorabia Nutrition outlines.
Brainberry is based on the extract of the Aronia ‘Nero Eggert’ variety and is standardized at 25% cyanidin. The researchers used MRI to measure cerebral blood flow while assessing cognitive performance using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB), a widely recognized computer-based testing platform. This test has been widely validated in academic and clinical research and is considered the reference standard for measuring specific cognitive domains.
Brainberry supplements produced statistically significant improvements in spatial working memory as measured by the CANTAB memory test. Researchers noted a 20% reduction in errors compared to placebo.
“Spatial working memory is essential for everyday cognitive tasks such as navigation, object and word recognition, and problem solving, and is known to be sensitive to age-related cognitive decline,” Solavia Nutrition highlights.
Meanwhile, participants who supplemented with this ingredient had reduced regional cerebral blood flow in one cluster in the right insular cortex compared to the placebo.
“Perhaps the reduced cerebral blood flow in this brain region may be related to inhibitory control over insular cortex-related functions such as motivational decision-making, emotional processing, and stress responses,” the company speculates.
In recent news from Solabia Nutrition, the company announced a clinical study conducted at Maastricht University. This clinical study supports the women’s health and beauty benefits of Bonolive, an ingestible manzanilla olive leaf extract.
moreover, Bonolive reduced pentosidine (a key cellular aging marker) compared to a placebo and helped maintain stable elastin levels during menopausal aging. However, these results were not statistically significant.
Last June, the U.S. FDA Approval letter issued What is the generally perceived safety of Solabia Nutrition’s two main ingredients, Watts’Up and Cordiart? The two ingredients, derived from the European-grown sweet orange (Citrus sinensis), are designed for use in nutritional supplements, functional foods, and beverages.
