Researchers from seven Greek universities and research institutes have developed an artificial intelligence application designed to predict life-threatening abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture.
AAA is the 13th leading cause of death and the 3rd leading cause of sudden death in Europe and America. The mortality rate for those who experience a rupture is as high as 80%. Because aneurysms are often asymptomatic, they often go undetected until a crisis occurs.
Christos Manopoulos, director of the NTUA Biofluids Institute and project coordinator, describes the SAFE-AORTA tool as a “clinical decision support system.” It processes a variety of patient data, including CT scans, blood flow velocity, and medical history, to create a “digital twin” of a patient’s aorta. The twins are being monitored through smartwatches and doctor updates.
