Behringer FLOW 4V – Compact audio mixer and recorder for filmmakers

The Behringer FLOW 4V is a compact digital mixer and audio recorder designed for film and video production. It features four balanced XLR/1/4-inch TRS microphone inputs with up to +70 dB of gain, 10 tracks, timecode, switchable +48 V phantom power, low input noise, and a wide 140 dB dynamic range suitable for dialogue and location recording. Additionally, it supports 24-bit and 32-bit float recording at 48 kHz, covers common film and broadcast frame rates from 23.98 to 60 fps, and features Micro HDMI with camera-controlled recording initiation, simplifying on-set operation and audio and video synchronization. Additional features include stereo and headset monitoring outputs, a stereo auxiliary input, a USB audio interface, Bluetooth audio support, and USB-C power delivery.

Many models of audio mixers and recorders are available from companies such as zoom, sound deviceand TascamGerman audio equipment manufacturer Behringer also caters to filmmakers. The recently announced FLOW 4V audio mixer and recorder aims to offer an impressive list of features in a compact and affordable body. Let’s take a look at the details.

Behringer FLOW 4V – 140dB dynamic range, 32-bit floating point

The FLOW 4V audio mixer offers a frequency response of 5 Hz to 22 kHz (±1 dB) and an input dynamic range of up to 140 dB (142 dB A-weighted). This range allows the system to accommodate both quiet dialogue and high-level sound sources without introducing excessive noise or distortion. This is especially important in uncontrolled shooting environments.

Four balanced XLR/1/4″ TRS combo inputs can be used for microphone or line level sources. Each input provides up to +70 dB of gain and supports low-power dynamic and condenser microphones via switchable +48 V phantom power. The stated equivalent input noise (EIN) of -130 dBu (-132 dBu A-weighted) indicates low self-noise, which is relevant for speech and subtle ambient recordings.

Maximum input levels of +18 dBu on XLR and +29.5 dBu on TRS allow you to connect professional audio sources without external attenuation. -110 dB crosstalk rejection at 1 kHz further supports clean multichannel recordings.

recording format

FLOW 4V supports 24-bit and 32-bit floating point recording at 48 kHz sample rate. For filmmakers, 32-bit float recording requires no gain settings during capture, allowing level adjustments to be made later in post-production without clipping or loss of detail.

Frame rate compatibility includes 23.98, 24, 25, 29.98, 30, 50, and 60 fps, covering common film, broadcast, and online distribution standards. This allows you to consistently adjust your audio recordings to a wide range of camera systems and production formats.

Camera integration and monitoring

A micro HDMI port with CEC support allows camera-controlled recording initiation, allowing FLOW 4V to automatically start recording when a compatible camera starts rotating. This feature simplifies on-set operations and reduces manual errors when shooting multi-takes.

Monitoring and output options include a stereo 1/8″ TRS output and headset input/output via 1/8″ TRRS suitable for headphones with or without a built-in microphone. The headphone amplifier is specified to deliver up to 110 mW into 30 Ω, providing sufficient levels for monitoring in typical production environments. An additional stereo 1/8-inch AUX input allows connection of a secondary audio source such as a reference feed or wireless receiver.

In addition to standalone operation, flow 4v It functions as a USB 2.0 audio interface via the USB-C connector, providing 12 input channels and 2 output channels to the host computer. This allows the device to be used for direct recording into editing and audio software, as well as voiceover recording and post-production tasks.

The unit also includes Bluetooth 4.0 dual-mode connectivity with support for A2DP profile. Bluetooth operation is specified for short range use (up to 12 meters without interference) and may be used for monitoring or playback in certain scenarios.

Power, physical properties and accessories

The FLOW 4V is powered via USB-C with Power Delivery and is listed as having a power consumption of around 10W. This allows it to run from a USB-C power adapter or battery pack commonly used in mobile production setups.

The physical unit measures 53 x 184 x 128 mm and weighs 800 g, falling within the size and weight range suitable for bag-based audio setups, tripod mounting, or integration into compact camera rigs.
