‘Very obvious’: Bo Bichette on decision to sign with Mets

Bo Bichette had no hesitation in joining the New York Mets, even though he received an offer from a team for the first time in his baseball career.

At his induction press conference in New York on Wednesday, the former Blue Jay spoke with Mets director of baseball operations David Stearns and Bichette’s agent about how excited he is to join the Queens-based team.

“I had a lot of conversations with the team and some good conversations, but after a lot of prayer and conversations with my family, my agent, and even some friends, I came to the conclusion that it was obvious that I wanted to be a Met,” Bichette said after wearing the new jersey for the first time.

According to previous reports, Bichette had offers from teams including the Philadelphia Phillies (a divisional rival of the Mets), Boston Red Sox, and Toronto Blue Jays.

Bichette, 27, has spent his entire professional career with the Blue Jays after being drafted in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft.

In seven years in MLB, he has a career batting average of .294 with 111 home runs and 437 RBIs, earning him two All-Star selections in 2021 and 2023.

And while the Blue Jays reached the World Series for the first time in Bichette’s tenure last season, the infielder likely needs the ability to compete on a more consistent basis.

“Mr. Cohen (Steve Cohen, Mets owner) and David (Stearns) have put together an organization that wants to win every year, has a chance to win the World Series every year, and has the roster to back that up,” Bichette said of the new team. “It’s very exciting to be a part of.”

And while playing for a big-money contender remains at the top of Bichette’s wish list, the Orlando, Fla., native is excited to head to North America’s largest city, calling New York “one of the best cities in the world, probably the best city in the world…”

“All of that is something I’ve always wanted to be a part of. So I’m excited to be here and excited to be a part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.”
