WHO sees low risk of spread from India’s Nipah outbreak

The World Health Organization said the risk of further spread from a recent outbreak of Nipah virus cases in India remains low, allaying concerns about the possibility of a more widespread outbreak of the deadly pathogen.

The United Nations health agency provided the assessment to Caixin after officials in India’s West Bengal state reported two confirmed cases. Both infected people are nurses working at the same hospital and reported initial symptoms in the last week of December 2025. His symptoms rapidly worsened and he was admitted to an isolation ward in early January.
