Ms Momsen, 26, immediately sought medical attention, but her face was left with severe marks around her nose, mouth and right eye.

And just before the event in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, was completely canceled, she had to be dragged down the slope on a sled stretcher.

Monsen was then taken to hospital for further tests.

Nina Ortlieb, who will be a featured athlete at the upcoming Winter Olympics, and American skiing ace Lindsey Vonn also suffered bad crashes.

“I only got a black eye,” said Austrian competitor Ortlieb, but Vonn’s participation in the Milan-Cortina Games, which start next week, is in doubt.

The 41-year-old three-time Olympic medalist lost control after the jump and was trapped in the safety net.

She eventually got up and carefully made her way down the mountain, but her knee was clearly in pain and she headed to the medical tent as soon as she crossed the finish line.

Vonn was the third woman among the original six racers to crash, prompting organizers to take action.

It was a particularly difficult run for the competitors due to the fresh snow and challenging lighting conditions on the slopes.

And the decision to cancel the event was made after pioneers skied the course to survey it.

Momsen was a junior with a promising future, finishing fifth in the giant slalom event at the 2018 World Junior Alpine Ski Championships.

He has an older brother, Marcus, who is also a professional skier and made his World Cup debut in the same year.
