Live updates on Iran-US tensions: US President Donald Trump expressed confidence on Friday (local time) that Iran would prefer to reach a deal rather than face military action by the US. “I can tell you this: They want a deal,” he told reporters at the White House. The US president also said he had given Iran a deadline to begin talks over its nuclear and missile programs, but did not specify a deadline. President Trump cited rising tensions between the two countries and said he was deploying a “huge fleet” toward Iran.
“We have a large fleet, a large convoy, call it what you want, but it’s heading toward Iran right now,” Trump said, referring to the U.S. Navy’s aircraft carrier group in waters near Iran, according to AFP.
He added: “I hope we can reach an agreement. If we reach an agreement, that’s good. If we don’t, we’ll see what happens.”
