Tributes have poured in for beloved Canadian actress Catherine O’Hara, star of Home Alone and Schitt’s Creek, who passed away this week at the age of 71.

U.S. media reported Friday that O’Hara died at his home in Los Angeles after a short illness.

Born and raised in Toronto, O’Hara began her acting career in the 1970s at the Second City Improv Theater and later appeared on the iconic Canadian comedy show SCTV.

She entered the film industry with 1980’s Double Negative, alongside longtime collaborators Eugene Levy and John Candy.

However, she became widely known to audiences around the world when she played Macaulay Culkin’s mother in 1990’s Home Alone.

“It’s the perfect movie, right?” she told People magazine in 2024.

More recently, younger viewers have embraced O’Hara’s role as the patriarch of a wealthy family losing its fortune. Schitt’s Creekwhere she again starred alongside Levy and his son Dan.

She won the 2020 Emmy Award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role as Moira Rose.

Macaulay Culkin

“Mom, I thought there was still time. I wanted to hear more. I wanted to sit in the chair next to you. I heard you. But there was so much I wanted to say. I love you. See you soon,” Culkin wrote on Instagram.

Eugene Levy

Levy co-starred with O’Hara on Second City and SCTV, and later co-starred with her in several projects including Christopher Guest’s Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and Waiting for Guffman.

Levy said in a statement that “words do not seem to be enough to express the sense of loss” he felt after her death. “I had the pleasure of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over 50 years,” he said.

“From my beginnings on stage in The Second City, to SCTV, films with Chris Guest, and six glorious years on Schitt’s Creek, I cherished our working relationships, but most of all our friendships, and I will miss her dearly.”

“My heart goes out to Beau, Matthew, Luke and the entire O’Hara family.”

Dan Levy

“What a gift it has been to dance in the warm light of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance for so many years,” Levy, who played O’Hara’s character’s son David Rose on “Schitt’s Creek,” wrote on Instagram.

“Having worked with my father for over 50 years, Catherine was part of my extended family even before playing my family. It’s hard to imagine a world without her. I will cherish all the funny memories I was lucky enough to make with her.”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney

“In more than 50 years of work, Kathryn has earned a place in the canon of Canadian comedy, from SCTV to Schitt’s Creek,” Carney wrote in X.

“Canada has lost a legend. Our thoughts are with her family, friends and everyone who loved her work on screen. Her name will be sorely missed.”

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau

Prime Minister Trudeau praised O’Hara as “a beloved Canadian icon with a rare gift of comedy and heart.”

“She made generations laugh and helped tell Canada’s story to the world in a way that only she could. We are thinking of her family, friends and everyone who had the joy of her work,” Trudeau wrote of X.

Seth Rogen

Rogen, who co-starred with O’Hara on the series “The Studio,” said that when he first met O’Hara, he told her, “I think she’s the funniest person.” [he’d] It was so much fun to see it on screen. ”

“‘Home Alone’ was the movie that made me want to make movies. It was an absolute honor to work with her,” Rogen said in an Instagram post.

“She was hysterical, kind, intuitive, generous… She made me want to create a show worthy of her presence, which is truly shocking. We are all lucky to live in a world with her in it.”
