Days after releasing data showing more than 800 people went missing in the capital in the first half of January, Delhi Police on Thursday sought to allay public fears, saying there was “no reason to cause panic or fear” as the numbers actually reflected a decline compared to the same period last year.
According to official data of Delhi Police, PTI, A total of 807 people were reported missing from January 1st to 15th, with an average of 54 people reported missing each day. Of these, 509 were women and girls, and 298 were men. Of the total missing persons reported, 191 were minors and 616 were adults.
In an official statement, police said that while data was being recorded, January 2026 saw a “reduction in the number of missing persons reported compared to the same period last year.” However, the Delhi Police did not reveal the specific total amount for the month in its statement.
Police maintained that they followed a transparent and unbiased crime reporting policy. All complaints regarding missing persons will be registered and investigated immediately. A missing person report can be filed not only at the local police station, but also through online platforms and emergency response support systems (112).
“Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) will be strictly followed in all missing person cases. Cases involving children will be given the highest priority and efforts will be initiated immediately to trace the missing person,” the statement said.
Special missing persons units have been deployed in all districts of the city to ensure focused action. It further added that the Anti-Trafficking Unit of the Crime Branch is actively working on cases involving missing persons, especially children, to ensure speedy investigation and recovery.
Police further said that so far no organized gangs or criminal networks have been found to be involved in any child disappearance or kidnapping cases in Delhi.
Police called on the public to remain vigilant and calm and not to pay attention to rumors and unconfirmed information spread through social media and other platforms. Officials warned that if they are found to be spreading panic or misinformation, they could be sued under relevant legal provisions.
Delhi Police also advised the public to promptly report cases of missing persons and share accurate information with authorities to assist in investigations.
