TVK slams Tennessee government’s SOP for discriminatory targeting of pre-outreach

The Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) has expressed concern over the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) of the Tamil Nadu government, which it considers to be discriminatory against emerging political parties. TVK General Secretary KG Arunraj argued that the guidelines favor existing political factions while creating obstacles for new entrants.

Discriminatory targeting claims

Arunraj stressed that TVK has faced repeated difficulties in obtaining permits for public gatherings. In a recent instance, an application to hold a meeting in Vellore on February 8 was rejected. The government cited a pre-scheduled event with the prime minister at the same venue as the reason for the refusal.

Concerns about political impartiality

Party leaders said the decision was arbitrary and representative of a broader pattern of discrimination against TVK. Arunraj pointed out that SOPs tend to favor recognized political parties, thereby undermining the democratic principle of equal participation opportunities for all groups.

  • TVK’s request for a public meeting was rejected as an event with the prime minister was scheduled.
  • The guidelines impose a disproportionate burden on emerging organizations compared to established organizations.
  • The party claims these restrictions prevent direct interaction with the public.

Administrative responsibility and event approval

Apart from the issue of Congress approval, Arunraj criticized the shifting of administrative responsibilities to political parties. He argued that the government and police required those involved not only to manage the venue but also to maintain order in the surrounding area, a task traditionally managed by law enforcement agencies.

Concerns about event hosting guidelines

Additionally, Mr. Arunraj objected to a provision that would require gatherings with more than 50,000 participants to secure permits 30 days in advance. They argued that such excessive conditions not only limit voluntary political mobilization but also impose an undue burden on political parties.

Call for revisions to regulations

TVK claims that the current SOP is aimed at curbing its growth and preventing its leadership from connecting directly with its supporters. The party is calling on the Tamil Nadu government to amend these regulations to create a fair political environment. They warn that the ongoing restrictions could be interpreted as an attempt to stifle democratic expression.

In summary, TVK’s continued challenge to the Tamil Nadu government’s SOPs highlights serious issues regarding political equality and fair access to public participation in the state.
