Multi-million dollar horror crash halts Bathurst 12 Hour race

The incident reportedly began early in the lap when Johannes Selger in the #79 Tsunami RT Porsche 911 crashed into the wall at the top of The Mountain.

Replays showed the No. 100 Globe Racing Mercedes AMG driven by Kai Allen approaching left-handed driver Forrest Elbow on a downhill slope, causing what appeared to be nose-to-tail contact.

Selger’s Porsche was parked with its nose facing the outside wall, forcing the rest of the pack to drive through a small gap in the back.

Everyone passed, except for Damien Hamilton in the #14 Volante Rosso Motorsport Aston Martin Vantage, who stopped on the left.

The race-leading #77 Craft-Bamboo Racing Mercedes-AMG, driven by Ralph Aaron, was unable to see and crashed into the stationary Porsche.

These vehicles sustained significant damage and were immediately red flagged.

Miraculously, no other cars were involved in the accident. Team GMR Mercedes-AMG’s Maro Engel and 75 Express Mercedes’ Luca Stolz managed to avoid the spinning car.

“I saw the yellow flag, so I backed up. When I came back, there were cars parked and cars everywhere,” Engel said.

“I really don’t know how they got through there without making contact.”

Stolz added: “It was a pretty tough situation. I just saw a car stopped at Forrest Elbow and Ralf was trying to avoid it and ended up hitting me. So I just moved to the left. I think I was just lucky.”

“I heard there was a car in Forest Elbow, so I went out for a bit.” [of a gap]even if I took out a little bit, it might not have been enough, but I just happened to be lucky.

“First of all, I hope Ralf and all the drivers are okay. It doesn’t look like there was a touch or anything. I think he just rolled some debris over.”

Team WRT driver Jordan Pepper, who was at the back of the top 10, said the mix of green and yellow flags was confusing.

Racing had just restarted after the safety car was brought in due to James Golding’s crash at Salman Park.

“It was a little weird. There was a yellow flashing up the hill from The Cutting. Then as we went over the skyline it was a green flag, a yellow flag, a green flag, then it was green. And then I heard the engineer’s voice on the radio,” Pepper said.

“He almost saved us because he was yelling, ‘Stop, stop, stop, there’s a big collision ahead!’”
