Borussia Dortmund achieved a traditional home victory against Atalanta and will go into the second leg of the playoffs with a two-goal lead to advance to the Champions League knockout stages.
The match was delayed 15 minutes after the Bundesliga club encountered traffic problems on the way to the stadium, but the hosts took the lead within three minutes through forward Selous Guirassy.
The Guinea international scored his 16th goal of the season when he connected with Julian Ryerson’s cross and headed home.
The 1997 champions continued to dominate and doubled their lead in the 42nd minute when Guirassi turned provider and crossed for Maximilian Baier to hit the back post.
Despite increasing their share of the ball in the second half, Atalanta failed to really test home keeper Gregor Kobel.
The return match will take place in Bergamo on Wednesday 25th February (17:30 GMT).
