Cold rain cancels departures at Berlin airport

Departures were suspended at Berlin Brandenburg Airport on Thursday morning after freezing rain made it impossible to de-ice aircraft, an airport spokesperson said.

The disruption is affecting air travel in the German capital as the National Weather Service warns of dangerous icy conditions, although landings initially appear unaffected.

What did Berlin Airport advise its passengers?

Passengers were advised to expect flight cancellations and significant delays. The airport urges travelers to check directly with airlines for the latest flight status. It said the disruption is likely to continue until weather conditions improve.

Germany suffered a prolonged cold snap in January and February, with Berlin blanketed in snow and temperatures dropping below -10 degrees Celsius (14 degrees Fahrenheit).

The unusually cold winter caused widespread travel disruption, especially on trains.

The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a warning for Berlin with a high risk of dangerous ice. Forecasters said the freezing rain could cause severe slippery conditions across the city.
