March 1st is the meteorological beginning of spring. Celtic tradition celebrates St. Bridget’s Day on February 1st as the first day of spring, but this month has felt very wintry and very wet. As we move into March, the temperatures will start to rise and I hope I can get back to gardening. It is best to stay away from the ground while it is saturated. Stepping on wet ground will only make it harder. It can also be slippery in this weather.

March is a busy month for gardeners as there is so much to sow, plant and grow. It is also the time when nature begins to bud. I found buckthorn already blooming in the countryside.
