After 25 years, it might be time to admit that Halo was okay.

halo is an undeniable staple in the gaming world, having earned an impeccable legacy as an innovator and major influencer both in the industry as a whole and in the FPS genre. Its huge success spawned numerous sequels, spin-off media, and TV shows (which we all agree never really existed). This is a remarkable achievement for what began as a revolutionary experience in an emerging medium that few believed would catch on like this.

But as revolutionary and remarkable as it is, halo I used to be that way, but as the years have gone by I’ve begun to reconsider both my relationship with it and its place in broader gaming culture. For all its strengths, and there are many, I can’t help but wonder if nostalgia and its place in the video game development timeline have a lot to do with this game. halo’s Astronomical success. teeth halo Was it truly great, or was it simply lucky to be released at the beginning of a burgeoning industry? I’m not convinced it’s the former.

Halo has more misses than hits.

I would like to make it abundantly clear. halo Not only was this game incredibly innovative for its time, but it also significantly contributed to the birth of both narrative first-person shooters and the broader FPS genre that we’ve all come to know and love today. I’m not going to deny it here halo I believe it is disingenuous, but its exceptional heritage. haloFor all its flaws, it was an amazing success when it was released in 2001, and it’s understandable why so many people were drawn to it at the time.

I myself spent many of my formative years playing halo With friends and family. Longing for split-screen couch co-op play, mourn the death That’s almost entirely because I’ve been playing for so long. halo My brothers and I blasted each other out of the sky in New Alexandria and tried to casually rescue Captain Keyes. But despite using clearly discolored and stained rose-colored glasses, I find myself wondering how good I am halo teeth.

halo’s The narrative throughout the early trilogy is messy and, at times, frankly illogical. Any nuance gained in the second game is wasted in the third. Characters often make bad decisions unnecessarily. Despite the series’ fairly epic and action-packed scope, the broader lore is under-explored outside of the now-mandated spin-offs, and much of the story is delivered in boring conversational form. It’s not until later entries that more experimentation with structure and tone begins, but still; the best halo game You will be betrayed by its stubborn structure.

Since 343 took over, halo’s The story continues to be put on the back burner. Halo 4 The laughably bad villains and the fifth film’s incoherent decision to sideline Master Chief proved that the studio lacked the narrative talent to deliver anything even memorable. This is puzzling. because, halo What was so innovative in the first place was the seamless blending of story and gunplay. Considering how bad it is infinite The campaign is outdated, so halo It would have been just as well received if it had been released for the first time today, or if we were simply lucky to have it released when it was released.

halo When it was released in 2001, not only was gaming starting to grow in popularity, and the appeal of what was once a niche game suddenly expanded, but the FPS genre was also almost in its infancy. Of course, something like doom, wolfensteinand quake It provided fans with an intuitive and enjoyable experience. Yet none of them rose to the same level of quality and narrative potential. halo Established. what happened when halo I really had no competition, even the first goal I was trying to achieve. call of duty Two years have passed since its release.

It was a really great time to be a game developer and a fledgling new franchise because there were endless possibilities, a huge industry to fill, and no one to compare it to. In other words, halo I got lucky. That’s not the case halo Failed on the road to success. Bungie has clearly proven to be filled with talented and ambitious developers. halo’s It has many innovative qualities, all of which have dramatically evolved the medium. But it’s like a breakup, star wars Before that, it’s very likely that you’ll continue to suffer from consistent declines in quality. halo’s Success simply comes from being first, not necessarily the best.

Looking back halo In 2026, it will be hard to see any cracks forming. Even in remakes and remasters, repetitive level design, unnecessarily complex story beats, unfair enemy placement, painfully accurate AI, long, drawn-out sequences, and poorly placed checkpoints create a frustrating experience. has many redeeming qualities halothe music, the weapon sandbox, the multiplayer mode, the visual style, and much more. halo It often feels like an average FPS experience.

We’ve seen things like: criminally underrated battleborn, high guard, evolution, Homefront: The Revolution, split gateor Bungie’s own destiny It can be released with some innovative features, only to be quickly forgotten, sidelined, or endlessly criticized. halo’s Even if it failed, it would definitely have followed in the footsteps of the aforementioned titles if it had been released now instead of back in the day when there was no comparable experience to judge it from. destiny This is frankly proven as it has the same advantages and disadvantages. halois developed by the same studio but often has mixed terrible reviews.

Despite all of my complaints and criticisms, it’s hard to deny that there’s something special about Halo. I’m still listening to it as I write this. Hello ODST As I listened to the soundtrack, I was reminded that its neon-filled, jazz-infused, sombre atmosphere was unlike any other I’d experienced. I think a lot of my frustration with the Halo series comes from its recent lack of potential.

Equally popular infinite The campaign was just getting started, but its poorly implemented structure and disappointing story lacked the replay value that so much of the original game featured. 343 also underperformed on the multiplayer front, canceling split-screen mode and robbing the series of a beloved and sacred tradition. Halo 5: Guardians It was an unforgettable mess, and the TV show tarnished what little positive reputation the series had, and halo 4 It’s better to keep it straight in your rearview mirror.

With a completely unnecessary remake of a remastered version of the 2001 game looming ominously, I can’t help but feel like even Xbox doesn’t know what to do with this game. halo franchise. But there’s a chance here that Halo will prove that its success was always based on more than just good timing, and show us what’s next. ODST and arrival It wasn’t a one-time miracle. If the newly formed Halo studio can create not just a great game, but one that feels just as special in today’s oversaturated and cynical market, Halo could regain that indescribable magic it once had. Halo: Combat Evolved Back in 2001, an idyllic year without competition.
