Al-Shabab attacks military base in southern Somalia
Kismayo, January 21 – Al-Shabaab fighters launched a heavy attack on the Jubaland security forces base in Kudei, Lower Juba province early Wednesday morning, local sources said.
Residents reported that the attack began with an explosion, followed by direct clashes between government forces and the attackers. Kdei is a strategic coastal area approximately 60 kilometers south of the port city of Kismayo.
Jubaland security officials said Jubaland forces repelled the attack and prevented al-Shabab from entering the base.
Meanwhile, al-Shabaab issued a statement claiming complete control of the base and Kdei Island, and said it had killed and captured several soldiers. These claims could not be independently verified.
The exact number of casualties remains unknown and the situation in the region remains tense.
This latest attack highlights the ongoing security challenges in southern Somalia, where al-Shabab continues to target government and regional forces.
