Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo will start in the EFL Cup semi-final against Newcastle United following changes to the competition’s rules this season.
Semenyo, 26, joined Josep Guardiola’s side from Bournemouth in a £65m deal and made his debut in goal in a 10-1 win over Exeter City in the third round of the FA Cup.
The Ghanaian international came off the bench in August’s EFL Cup second-round defeat to Brentford against Bournemouth, a game that would have earned him a cup tie in previous seasons.
However, under EFL Rule 6.4, players are allowed to play for up to two clubs in the competition during a season.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said he was opposed to City changing the rules to force new players to play against their own team.
“Once I found out they signed him, it was good to know the rules changed,” he said in the pregame press conference.
“I have to say this is one rule change that I probably can’t support at this point.”
Max Alleyne, who was recalled from his loan to Championship side Watford, will also be eligible for Tuesday’s first leg against Newcastle after playing in the first round of the competition.
Chelsea forward Marc Giu also benefited from the rule change after appearing for Sunderland on loan in the matchday two game against Huddersfield Town, but rejoining Chelsea before the end of the summer transfer window.
