The series follows staff changes and patient movements within Cork Hospital, with the episode featuring Patricia being rushed to CUH by ambulance after she is in a critical condition and is having difficulty breathing. She requires a special pressure mask to force oxygen into her lungs and keep her airways functioning. The emergency department team’s first task is to stabilize her condition and then look for the cause of her acute respiratory failure.

Peter has a large aortic aneurysm that will require surgery before it ruptures, which would likely be fatal. The surgical team, led by consultant vascular surgeon Greg Fulton, has allowed in young surgeons in training, one of whom is responsible for key parts of the surgery.
