museum quality Le Loin at sunset Mr O’Connor led the auction of 129 lots, with a total estimated value of over €1 million. The work, painted around 1902, graces the cover of the catalog and has an estimated price of €150,000 to €200,000.

O’Connor revisited Montigny, a small town on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau, in the autumn of 1902, capturing the sun’s setting on the horizon and its mysterious half-glow. Art historian Jonathan Bennington says that works created during this period were “characterized by a highly painterly use of oil paint, ranging from translucent smudges to textured smudges and thick calligraphic strokes.” This approach, radical for its time, can be traced back to O’Connor’s friendship with Gauguin and loyalty to Van Gogh in the early 1890s.

“Pool Made of Book Paper and Blue Ink” by David Hockney of Whyte’s.

david hockney’s A pool made from book paper and blue ink The work reflects his long-standing fascination with pools, light, and the California lifestyle, transforming everyday subjects into vivid studies of color, surface, and perception. A holiday in Kerry inspired Paul Henry. By the early 1930s, after a separation from his wife and a period of financial hardship, the famous artist had begun a new life in Enniskerry, County Wicklow, with his partner, RHA Mabel Young, who later became his second wife. By September 1934 he was legally separated and, after a holiday on the Isle of Kerry, his thirst for inspiration returned. This newfound passion for his environment is evident in the bright palette of his landscape painting Connemara (1932-1935), which was sold as Lot 17 with an estimated price of €120,000 to €150,000.

“Moonrise, Connemara Shore” by Ciaran Clear from Whyte’s.

Ciaran Clear’s Moonrise, Connemara Coast (€4,000-€6,000) is a very different take on a similar theme, depicting a silvery sea, figures on a beach looking out to sea, dark sails and shadowy rocks.
