608: Jimmy of Sun Prairie predicts early spring | Features

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. — The City of Sun Prairie hosted its 78th Annual Groundhog Day Prediction Monday morning in Cannery Square, consulting once again on the famous weather forecaster.

The event is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 2, in downtown Sun Prairie, with festivities beginning at 6:45 a.m. The prediction itself was timed for sunrise at 7:11 a.m., when Jimmy the groundhog revealed whether Wisconsin would experience six more weeks of winter or early spring.

Jimmy predicted early spring.

The ceremony began with the color guard singing the national anthem, followed by remarks from Sun Prairie Mayor Steve Stocker. State Sen. Melissa Ratcliffe has submitted a gubernatorial proclamation officially recognizing Groundhog Day in Wisconsin. City council members and other local councilors also attended.

Sun Prairie, which bills itself as the “Groundhog Capital of the World,” has a long tradition centered around Jimmy, whose prophecies draw early morning crowds every year.
