The protests erupted following the assassination of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei in a joint attack by the United States and Israel.

At least nine people were killed near the US consulate in Karachi, Pakistan, as protests erupted following the killing of Iran’s supreme leader. Ayatollah Ali Khameneia source told Al Jazeera.

Security forces opened fire to disperse hundreds of pro-Iranian demonstrators who tried to storm the consulate early Sunday morning, injuring several others.

Police surgeon Dr. Sumaiya Saeed told Al Jazeera that at least nine bodies were taken to Karachi’s civil hospital.

Video footage shared online and verified by Al Jazeera showed injured people being carried away by bystanders. Other images showed demonstrators attempting to storm the US consulate building on Mai Kolaci Street in the city.

Large-scale protests also occurred in other parts of Pakistan.

Protesters set fire to a United Nations office building in Skardu, a city in northern Pakistan in the predominantly Shiite Gilgit-Baltistan region known for its Himalayan mountains popular with tourists.

“A large number of protesters gathered outside the United Nations office in the UK and burnt down the building,” local government spokesperson Shabir Mir told Reuters, adding that no casualties were reported.

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the US consulate in the central city of Lahore, but there were no reports of violence.

“Some of the protesters tried to break down a security gate several hundred yards from the consulate, but police stopped them without using force,” eyewitness Aqeel Raza told Reuters.

Demonstrations are also planned for Sunday afternoon near the diplomatic enclave where the US embassy is located in the capital, Islamabad.

Protests in other countries

In Baghdad, hundreds of Iraqis dressed in black tried to storm the American embassy compound on Sunday despite heavy security.

“Sayed Ali Khamenei’s martyrdom hurt us,” Ali, a masked protester, told AFP news agency.

“We are here because we want the occupation American forces out of Iraq,” he said, referring to the U.S.-led coalition, which has recently reduced its presence and is now stationed primarily in northern Iraq.

Iraq’s top Shiite cleric, Grand Master Ali Sistani, called on Iranians to remain united as the Iraqi government announced a three-day period of mourning for Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran’s top political figure since 1989.

In Indian-administered Kashmir, thousands of Shiite Muslims took to the streets in the main city of Srinagar, with demonstrators holding red, black and yellow flags gathering in a central square.

Many of the participants chanted anti-Israel and anti-American slogans during the emotional but largely peaceful rally.

“We are all very sad today. We are mourning our beloved leader who was martyred,” Saeed Tawfik, 40, told AFP. “All of us [US President Donald] Trump…we will always stand up to your oppression. ”
