Expect to see a lot of interesting tennis on the second day of the Australian Open. There are 28 matches scheduled for Melbourne and, as always, here at LWOT we will provide predictions for all matches including Iga Swiatek vs. Yuan Yue, Coco Gauff vs. Kamila Rahimova, Mila Andreeva vs. Donna Vekic, Jessica Pegula vs. Anastasia Zakharova, Barbora Krejcikova vs. Diana Schneider and Victoria Mboko vs. Emerson Jones. But who will advance to the second round?
Australian Open 2nd day predictions
Amanda Anisimova vs Simona Waltert
Zayn: Amanda Anisimova enters the match as one of the few true favorites in the tournament. Simona Waltert may be a crafty player, but Anisimova’s power may be too much for her.
Prediction: Anisimova in second place
Jordan: It will be interesting to see how Anisimova handles the increased pressure on her after her impressive 2025. This should be a good draw to start her campaign. There’s nothing in Woltert’s game that Americans need to worry too much about.
Prediction: Anisimova in second place
Nurein: Woltert’s Grand Slam success has been limited, and this is a tall order for the Swiss. Anisimova has reached two Grand Slam finals in the past year, and the American will be one of the favorites to win in the next two weeks. I have a hard time understanding how Woltert can handle all the power coming from Anisimova’s racket.
Prediction: Anisimova in second place
Paula Badosa vs Zarina Diyas
Zayn: Paula Badosa, who is still working her way back from injury, should have enough baseline consistency to outperform Zarina Diyas, who is ranked around the top 300.
Prediction: Badosa in 2 years
Jordan: Physical issues are more likely to stop Badosa than Diyas. As she showed last year, the Spaniard can run deep if she stays healthy. If Badosa is in good shape on the court, it’s almost certain that he will win this one.
Prediction: Badosa in 2 years
Nurain: Diyas is an experienced name in the draw, but the Kazakh player hasn’t played in a Grand Slam in a while. Badosa has bigger weapons to earn a ticket to the second round.
Prediction: Badosa in 2 years
McCartney Kessler vs Emiliana Arango
Zayn: Emiliana Arango comes into this fight on a three-game losing streak, but against an aggressive opponent like McCartney Kessler, her confidence may be enough to sway the outcome.
Prediction: Kessler in Year 3
Jordan: Kessler will have to work hard against Arango, whose game is based on grit and extended rallies, regardless of the final score. Despite this, I don’t see an upset happening here. Kessler is a very cool character and doesn’t tend to panic about the people he fights.
Prediction: Kessler comes in at 2
Nurain: Kessler is typically very consistent on hard courts, so I expect him to encounter little resistance against Arango. The Colombian has improved over the past 12 months, but Kessler’s best tennis should bring him victory on this day.
Prediction: Kessler comes in at 2
Fran Jones vs Linda Klimovikova
Zayn: Linda Klimovikova looked exceptional in qualifying, while Francesca Jones recently set back with injury. Technically speaking, Jones should have the advantage here, but I think Klimovikova should be able to find a way against opponents who are less than 100%.
Prediction: Klimovikova will come in 3rd place
Jordan: I think Klimovikova can shock an experienced opponent. She played great in qualifying and her style suits her against less pacey opponents like Jones. The Brit doesn’t usually have a plan B if her gritty style doesn’t work out.
Prediction: Klimovikova 2nd place
Nurain: Jones is still chasing that elusive Grand Slam main draw win. She came close several times, but she must feel like this is a very good chance against Polish qualifier Klimovicova. That said, if Klimovikova carries her qualifying form into this match, she will be able to punch through the court.
Prediction: Klimovikova will come in 3rd place
