A man has appeared in court for the first time in more than a year, accused of attacking and killing an elderly man he didn’t know during an argument on a rural property.
He was identified as local father Matthew O’Brien, ABC reported.
“It was an unprovoked attack… but it was the result of an altercation that occurred,” Detective Inspector Catherine Flood told reporters today.
“No weapons were used.”
Mr Balfour was arrested at his home yesterday and charged with the murder of a 60-year-old man and a number of unrelated charges including supplying drugs.
The 29-year-old was wearing a dirty yellow T-shirt and gray shorts as he beamed into bail court from police custody today.
Previous appeals to the community for information have been fruitful, but police believe more help can be provided.
“If anyone knows something about this, we are appealing to them to come forward,” Mr Flood said.
