It’s been a rough few days for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and Friday night will be even more eventful, but it was even tougher for head coach Craig Berube.
And surprisingly, it has little to do with former Leaf Mitch Marner’s long-awaited and emotionally charged return to Scotiabank Arena (Sportsnet, Sportsnet Plus, 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT), where there will likely be boos and jeers.
It was a tough (huh?) time for Berube off the ice. More specifically, the weight room.
“I had an accident in the gym yesterday,” the second-year Maple Leafs bench boss explained to reporters Friday morning, showing a bruise on his eye and a bruise on his forehead.
Berube gave few details about the incident other than what happened on Thursday, but joked: “The other guy seems to have it worse. There were three of them.”
The 60-year-old man clarified that there was no altercation, saying: “It was stupid, it was a terrible accident. It’s my fault. I’m fine.”
And if there was any doubt that injury would prevent Berube from coaching Friday night against his friends-turned-enemies, Marner’s Golden Knights, when asked if he would be available, Berube immediately quashed those doubts with a “yes.”
The battle-scarred head coach and his club are now gearing up for a tense matchup against Las Vegas, highlighted by the fact that Toronto is looking to bounce back from losing four of its past five games and having a two-game slump.
It’s safe to say that Berube wants the Maple Leafs to do better against the Golden Knights than they did in their last scrimmage.
