BBC Antiques Road Trip expert: ‘I hope they choke on a carrot’ after tense auction

Antiques road trip expert Mark Hill delivered a vitriolic seven-word message to the auction crowd on the BBC show as he struggled to sell his items.

Antique road trip experts Izzy Ballmer and Mark Hill embark on the second leg of their journey along the east coast, scouring Lincolnshire for timeless treasures to be auctioned off in the latest episode of the BBC show.

Izzy is drawn to a variety of unique items, and Mark discovers an inkwell shaped like a bird. When they weren’t hunting for antiques, they enjoyed riding in the former troop transports that helped bring potatoes to market in England.

After acquiring a collection of vintage items, the two face off at an auction. But Izzy quickly branded it a “bit of a poop” after the first item she put up for auction only netted her a £1 profit.

Mark’s attempts to make a profit were equally disappointing, with his mid-century crockery set bought for £18 and failing to attract high bids.

In the end, it was sold for a disappointing £10, with Izzy admitting: “It’s a tough crowd today.” Mark reportedly retorted, rather harshly, “Well, I hope they choke on the carrot.” express. He quickly added: “I… obviously don’t.”

Despite this setback, Mark remained optimistic about the impressive Art Deco photo frame he bought for £20. His optimism paid off, and he made a handsome profit when it was sold at auction for £40.

A charming golden parrot-shaped inkwell he bought for £50 was then sold for just £55, making a profit of just £5. As Izzy pointed out, fountain pens don’t seem to be in fashion these days.

Izzy’s clown figurine then sold for £2, and Mark’s Victorian bottle, which was priced at £85, sold for £110. But she secured a profit of £24 on her last lot, a striking green vase.

Mark’s last piece made a profit of £28, but it turned out to be a miniature toothpick. He seemed satisfied after the surprising results of several other lots that went down that afternoon.

After the auction ended, the two calculated the total amount and established who won the episode. Izzie started at £200 and finished with a small loss of -9.10p, taking into account auction fees.

However, Mark recorded a slightly smaller loss of -4 pounds, making him the winner of the program.

After Izzy congratulated him, he playfully said: “It’s because of the toothpick…”
