BBL – Moises Enriquez – Babar Azam ‘took a few days’ to overcome single rejection from Stephen Smith

Smith wanted to go for a short boundary in the first over of the power surge, but when Babar dropped the last ball of the 11th over to long-on, Smith was unable to get any available runs. Smith scored a BBL record 32 runs in an over against Ryan Hadley.

And on the last ball of the 12th over, Smith was reluctant to make a second run but eventually made it. So Babar took a strike against Nathan McAndrew at the start of the 13th over. However, Babar managed to avoid a heave that attempted to cross the line on the first ball from the stumps, and was visibly angered as he hit the boundary marker with his bat and walked away.

He remained in the locker room for the remainder of the game and after the game when the players gathered in the outfield.

“It took a few days for it to settle down,” Enriquez told Fox Cricket during the preliminary final against Perth Scorchers. “To be honest, I think this is a bit of a misunderstanding of each other’s cultures.

“It’s a very common thing in our culture. And maybe for him (Babar), he wasn’t used to it and didn’t fully understand it. Once it was explained to him, he was totally fine with it. They kissed and made up, and the two great men were back on friendly terms again.”

Enriquez added that he and Sixers coach Greg Shippard played a leading role in the conversation with Babar. ”[We are] I was always trying to understand…I could see he was pretty upset about what happened on the field, so I needed to understand why he felt that way. Once I got to the root of it, I was fine. ”

“He’s good. Like I said before, I thought he batted really well last night. We had a good partnership and got a few runs,” Smith said before the game against the Brisbane Heat.

Babar, who joined as one of the big names in the BBL, has endured a difficult campaign. He scored 202 runs in 11 matches with a strike rate of 103.06. That dismal performance continued until Tuesday, when Babar was sent off for a duck off the second ball in a BBL qualifier against the Scorchers as the Sixers trailed for 148 points.
