Could the next great fantasy movie series be here? Apple TV believes so.

The streaming giant closed what was said to be an unprecedented deal to acquire the rights. Cosmere Books, fictional literary worlds by fantasy authors Brandon Sanderson.

The titles that are being considered for video first are: mistborn series, features, and Stormlight Archive series, for television.

The latter already has producers attached, with Blue Marble, run by former WME agent Teresa Kang, set to serve as executive producer. Stormlight Archive TV adaptation.

The deal was a rare one, and came about after a competitive situation in which Sanderson met with most of the city’s studio heads. Sources say this will give authors a greater degree of control over screen translation. Sanderson would become the architect of the universe. Writing, production, and consulting. And you’ll get approval. This is a level of involvement that not even JK Rowling or George RR Martin would enjoy.

Sanderson’s literary success and fan support helped pave the way for such a deal. One of today’s most prolific and beloved fantasy authors, with over 50 million copies in circulation. A collection of his entire series of books from around the world.

Backed by a unique and loyal legion of fans, he has raised nearly $100 million through crowdfunding. That included record-breaking Kickstarter publishing campaigns for four novels, the most successful in the platform’s history, totaling nearly $42 million.

Perhaps most surprising is that he has headlined his own fantasy convention, which has sold out every year since it was held earlier this decade. (The next one will be held in Salt Lake City from December 3rd to 5th, 2026.)

Cosmere’s books are set in different worlds and time periods, but the underlying premise is about a being named Adornasium who is murdered by a group of conspirators. The power of that being is split into 16 shards and dispersed by the conspirators across many worlds, spreading different types of magic throughout the universe.
