Britney Spears was arrested Wednesday night, according to information from authorities in Ventura County, California.
The pop superstar was stopped by California Highway Patrol (CHP) around 9:30 p.m., booked shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday, and later released, according to booking information obtained by CNN.
CHP spokesman Ryan Ayers confirmed to CNN by phone Thursday that Spears was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Her vehicle was towed, according to arrest information.
“This was a completely unacceptable and unfortunate incident,” a representative for Spears told CNN in an email. “Britney intends to take the right steps and abide by the law. We hope this is the first step in the long overdue changes that must occur in Britney’s life. We hope she gets the help and support she needs during this difficult time.”
“Her sons will be spending time with her,” the representative said. “Her loved ones will be making the necessary plans that are long overdue to ensure her happiness and success.”
This isn’t the first time Spears has had legal problems.
She was charged with misdemeanor hit and run in 2007 She was then fired after paying damages.
The following year, she was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation. Her father, Jamie Spears, was then granted conservatorship of her assets, which was initially temporary.
The conservatorship was later extended and lasted for 13 years, prompting fans to launch a “Free Britney” movement aimed at ending it.
That ended in 2021, and since then, Spears has been seen primarily through posts on her social media accounts, and often in videos of her dancing posted to Instagram. Her account became unavailable on Thursday.
Spears is scheduled to appear in court on May 4.
