Plane with 8 people on board crashes in Maine, FAA says

All passengers on board a private business jet that crashed Sunday night while taking off from Bangor International Airport in Maine were “presumed deceased,” authorities said.

According to the FAA, there were eight people on board the plane, seven passengers and one crew member. The FAA’s website lists the flight crew as seriously injured and the passenger as deceased.

However, Bangor police issued a statement Monday saying sources had provided information that “has not been verified or vetted through all appropriate channels before publication.”

Bangor Police said: “There were six people on board the plane. No one was transported to the hospital as a result of the incident and all on board the plane are presumed deceased. The identities of those on board the plane are being withheld at this time pending positive identification.”

The accident occurred around 7:45 p.m. local time. The FAA said the plane crashed on takeoff under “unknown circumstances.” The agency said the jet flipped over and a fire broke out.

The airport remained closed Monday, according to a news release posted on the Bangor, Maine Police Department and Bangor International Airport Facebook pages Monday morning.

“Multiple emergency personnel responded to an aircraft accident at Bangor International Airport (BGR) Sunday night,” the release said. “Around 7:45 p.m., there were reports of an incident involving an aircraft departing from BGR.”

“At this time, the airport remains closed. Numerous flight cancellations and diversions have occurred,” the release said.
